Just the ticket: over 20,000 people use buses during Armed Forces Weekend

Those taking the bus over Armed Forces Weekend was equivalent to the population of Loughborough.

 

More than 20,000 men, women and children decided to use the park and ride as well as the normal bus services to enjoy a weekend of fun in Cleethorpes.

Attracting over 250,000 people in total, the event was a huge success showcasing why Cleethorpes is the place to be. From the Red Arrows to the Coldstream Guards, there was plenty to see and the buses were doing their job to make sure everyone got a chance to experience it.

Throughout the weekend, North East Lincolnshire Council and their partner Stagecoach East Midlands provided a Park and Ride service with a number of local businesses and organisations doing their bit to make it all happen.

The Council would like to thank the Grimsby Institute and Wykeland for allowing their car parks to be used over the weekend. Without them, the scheme would not have been possible.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, Portfolio Holder for Transport, Housing and Infrastructure, echoed this by saying: “This was a huge success. Armed Forces Weekend is the biggest event in North East Lincolnshire’s calendar and we did everything we could to make it the best one yet.

“Everyone played their part in making it happen and I would like to thank everyone who used the buses over the course of the weekend.

“Using this service not only helps the passengers get to where they need to be, but it also helps the environment by reducing carbon emissions across the borough, something the Council is committed to doing.”

He added: “It’s clear to see from the number of passengers alone that this was a very successful weekend and I look forward to more of the same next year.”

Matt Cranwell, Managing Director at Stagecoach East Midlands, said: “It is great to support such an important event such as Armed Forces Weekend, to honour and celebrate the service of men and women in the armed forces, both past and present.

“It’s an opportunity for the public to show their appreciation for the sacrifices and contributions made by military personnel, including those currently serving, veterans, and their families.”
