Help clean up our air this Clean Air Day

Clean Air Day, the UK’s largest campaign on air pollution, is happening on Thursday 20 June 2024.

This year, the campaign is focusing on using our voices to help clean our environment. By discussing the benefits to the environment small changes could make, you can do more than you think to reduce air pollution.

 

North East Lincolnshire are pledging to reduce their air pollution in a number of ways. For example, they recently secured nearly £5 million in funding to help reduce carbon emissions across nine of its buildings.

 

The works will involve replacing ageing, fossil-fuel reliant systems with low carbon alternative technologies, as well as building fabric improvements and energy efficiency measures where appropriate for the buildings. The grant funding includes design, engineering, construction, and project management costs.

 

After careful consideration the nine buildings selected for the project were:

  • Immingham Swimming Pool
  • Humber Seafood Institute
  • Grimsby Leisure Centre
  • Grimsby Crematorium
  • Grimsby Education and Development Centre
  • Cromwell House
  • Poplar Road Business Units
  • Poplar Road Offices 
  • Doughty Road Depot Offices

How does the Council monitor and manage air quality?

 

The Council has a duty under the Environmental Act 1995, to carry out regular assessments of local air quality.

 

The government sets objectives relating to common pollutants found in towns and cities, and these are levels we must aim to meet. To make sure we achieve this, we are continually monitoring air quality within our borough. NELC uses two automatic monitoring stations and 37 air quality measurement tubes to check quantities of polluting nitrogen dioxide in the borough.

 

Results from the monitoring stations can be found in the Annual Status Report on the Council’s website at NELC Air Quality Annual Status Report 2023 . The tubes, known as diffusion tubes, have a wire mesh under a cap at the top. The mesh is coated in a chemical that absorbs nitrogen dioxide and shows how much is present in the air.
