Nunsthorpe recycle over 20 tonnes of waste and donate over 20 bikes in Community clean-up

Residents across the Nunsthorpe partnered with numerous businesses and organisations to fill 18 skips, collect 1,240kg of scrap metal and litter pick 271 bags of rubbish.

From 10am on Tuesday, 8 April, old mattresses, plant pots and everything in between found its way into skips across the area with one aim, to help the community. North East Lincolnshire’s Fostering team played their part by sponsoring a skip, but also provided important information on how people can become foster carers.

The success of the event was echoed in comments by residents. One said: "It was so nice walking here and seeing all the kids litter picking. Everyone is in high spirits and I can feel the community coming together."

Another added: "Thank you for doing this, my two children have enjoyed it and they have thanked me for bringing them along today."

Those involved were equally as impressed “Everything seemed to work according to plan, the Nunsthorpe community were amazing. Not only taking part, but also helping their neighbours," said Reverend Pat Barlow of St. Mark’s Church.

Honing in on the work of the community, Anne O’Flinn, from Housing Association Ongo, said: "It was an amazing community event and a great opportunity to work together with residents of Nunsthorpe to improve their community."

The event was jointly organised by Oasis and Lincolnshire Housing Partnership (LHP). In addition to the 18 skips, LHP also used vans to help remove waste which equated to three tonnes.

Emma Coxon, ASB Officer at LHP, said: “It’s wonderful to be able to support Nunsthorpe with such a positive event for the community – we’ve had some brilliant feedback from customers who have been able to get rid of unwanted items that they otherwise would have struggled to dispose of. In particular, it was amazing to see so many children and young people getting involved and being passionate about recycling, with lots of items going on to be repurposed! 

“This event was a great way to kickstart our Neighbourhood Actions Plans which are all about driving positive change, specifically tailored to each of the communities we work in. A huge thank you to everyone who took part in making Nunsthorpe an inviting place to be.” 

Michelle Donner, Hub Leader Oasis Hub South Grimsby and Cluster Lead North East, added: “It went better than we could have hoped for and it was great to see all the partners working together and we were really pleased to see the Fostering team from North East Lincolnshire Council sponsoring a skip.

“However, the biggest thanks goes to the residents for coming out and getting involved, none of this would have been possible without them. The day epitomised how much the community care about the Nunsthorpe and we hope to carry this forward in any future events.”

Councillor Henry Hudson, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Net Zero, said: “This is a great example of what residents across North East Lincolnshire can do when they band together.

“The whole of the Nunsthorpe should be proud of what they have achieved and we thank them as a Council for helping keep their streets clean.”
