A powerful new book written by a young woman with care experience was officially launched this week at Grimsby Town Hall. Surrounded by invited guests from across the community, 18-year-old Courtnay proudly introduced “Dear Younger Me, a foster care story” a personal and moving account of her journey through the care system.

Courtnay began writing the book in 2021, encouraged by the Voice and Influence team at North East Lincolnshire Council. What started as a private diary, soon became a therapeutic outlet – and eventually, a story she felt she could share.

As she opened up to others in the group, it soon became clear that others resonated with her story. Local arts organisation Lowercase Theatre, led by Matt Gray and Lisa February, stepped in to help Courtnay shape her writing and explore the possibility of publishing. Matt, who has worked closely with Courtnay over the past two years, said:

“We’ve had the privilege of working with Courtnay’s words which has been special. There’s been a lot of care to make sure that this book comes together in a really beautiful way.”

The book was published locally by Josie Moon of La Luna Publishing, who said:

“For me, these kinds of projects in publishing are really important, it’s very difficult for people to find publishers today. Having a local, independent publishing house means that these kinds of projects can be brought to life in a really meaningful way and I’m really proud to be part of it.”

Courtnay, who began writing the book in 2021 originally just for herself, spoke at the event and opened up about how the process of writing and eventually publishing the book has been emotional but extremely rewarding. She said:

“This book is to everyone who has been in care or who in coming into care to help them understand and reflect on their thoughts and feelings about what has happened.

Everybody has the ability to write a book, but not everyone has the belief they can write one or the support from the right people to pursue finishing it and publishing the book. I was lucky to have the support from Pippa, Matt, Lisa and Josie to write and publish my book.”

The event was opened by Ann-Marie Matson, Director of Children’s Services at North East Lincolnshire Council, who praised Courtnay’s bravery and impact:

“I am so proud of Courtnay and all that she has achieved in writing this book. It is a really brave thing to do to stand up and speak about very personal experiences so honestly.”

“The difference she will make to other care experienced young people, just by sharing her own story is monumental. Today is an important reminder that young people deserve for their voices to be heard and that their voices are at the heart of everything we do.”

North East Lincolnshire Council has commissioned the first publication of the book through the Voice and Influence team. The goal is to ensure that children in care have access to the book, with a copy available in every foster home for the children they support.

Looking ahead, the aspiration is for the book to be made available to every child in care across the UK. The Council is also exploring opportunities to make the book available for purchase in local bookstores.
