The Council have been awarded £1,431,000 for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging projects over the next four years.

The amount, funded by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), aims to support the rollout of infrastructure across the borough in areas with little or no opportunity for off-street charging points.

It’s hoped the funding will deliver between 300 and 600 EV charging points across the borough with units placed on street lamps, standalone pedestals and in Council owned car parks.

Initiatives such as this are crucial in helping to achieve the Council’s Carbon Neutral and Net Zero targets; supporting the wider Government commitment on ending the sale of new cars solely powered by internal combustion engines by 2035.

Additionally, it will benefit the Council’s Air Quality Strategy and Local Transport Plan to both improve and make North East Lincolnshire more sustainable.

The units will be installed in places where a significant percentage of residents do not have off-street parking options, where there is the largest demand for charging infrastructure.

The further use of Council owned car parks acknowledges that, in some areas, other kerbside activities will detract from the ability to provide EV charging and using off-street sites allows these other activities such as bus stops and loading bays to continue to be provided alongside new EV infrastructure.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, Portfolio Holder for Transport, Housing and Infrastructure, said: “We are thrilled to have been granted this money and eagerly anticipate the benefits this project will provide.

“Becoming Carbon Neutral and Net Zero are key priorities for this Council and initiatives such as this one will help us to take great strides forward to reaching these milestones.”
