Action taken to steer clear of Central Prom roadworks during busy Cleethorpes summer season

Major drainage works needed for Cleethorpes’ landmark new Sea Road development will not go-ahead as planned this month - avoiding any Central Prom roadworks during the summer season.

The main contractor, Lindum Group, has been thanked for finding a solution to prevent lane closures on the Prom during July and August when the works were originally planned for up to eight weeks. They will now go ahead in the autumn, with no delay to the build timetable or extra cost.

Hearing the news, North East Lincolnshire Council Leader, Cllr Oliver Freeston, said: “This is a great result. I have been talking to traders in the resort and do understand the frustrations they have especially with works taking place during this summer.

“This just shows what can be done if we work together – listening to concerns and raising issues to find solutions. I would like to thank Lindum Group and our council officers for sticking with this and coming up with an alternative.

“Clearly there are times when such disruption cannot be avoided and we all appreciate that – but this time a way has been found.”

Lindum Group has been able to change things, by arranging for different machinery to be brought onto the site. This will allow the drainage work to take place in tandem with construction of the building. The dry long-term weather forecast will also help as it lowers the risk of the site flooding until the drainage is fully installed.

Lindum Group Contract Manager, Mark Leason, said: “We recognised the concerns that had been raised locally and challenged ourselves to see whether there was another way of delivering this phase of the project. By changing our construction methodology and accepting a greater level of construction complexity, we have been able to move these works until after the school holidays while maintaining the overall programme.

"We're pleased we've been able to adapt our plans in response to the exceptional conditions and help reduce disruption during what is an important time of year for Cleethorpes."

The three-storey Sea Road building, being constructed on the former Waves site, is due for completion next spring. It will provide modern public amenities and changing facilities, together with commercially lettable space across all floors for retail and hospitality businesses.

The development is one of several projects being delivered in Cleethorpes through the previous Government's Levelling Up Fund programme, alongside improvements to Market Place and Pier Gardens.
