Members of North East Lincolnshire Council and Humberside Police have been recognised for their invaluable efforts during an incident in Grimsby Town Centre.

In May last year, pedestrian Susan Godfrey was hit by a bicycle along Victoria Street, where cycling is prohibited.

The cyclist, Elijah Daines, was recently sentenced for his actions at Grimsby Crown Court and now those who were there to help on the day have been rewarded.

Receiving a commendation from Chief Superintendent Paul French of Humberside Police, the trio were congratulated for their quick thinking and the first aid they administered to Susan after the incident.

Kerry-Anne Leaning, Police Community Support Officer, Derek Wright, Waste Investigation Support and Enforcement (WISE) Officer, and Callum Neary, WISE Officer, were all humbled by the award.

Police Community Support Officer Kerry-Anne said: “Being awarded a commendation for this piece of work makes me feel really happy, knowing I’ve had a positive impact in supporting Susan as a victim of crime. It’s amazing to know that Susan has been able to return to the town centre.”

Callum added: “For me, this shows the public that we’re there to do more than just keep them safe. We showed we can help in serious incidents and will always aid them as best we could.”

Helping Susan in her time of need, Derek recalled how everyone came together to do what was right. He said: “It was a horrible situation, but we all just did what we had to do to make sure the lady was okay and I’m glad we did.”

In a message to those that helped her, Susan said: “Thank you for everything. From the marshals to the police, nobody could have done anything more for me.

“Everyone was wonderful, and I don’t know what I would’ve done without them.”

Chief Superintendent Paul French said: “The actions of Kerry-Anne, Derek, and Callum on that day demonstrate the dedication and compassion we value in public service. Their willingness to step up in a critical moment ensured that Susan received the support she needed, while also ensuring we were able to bring the offender to justice - and I am proud to commend them for their dedication and professionalism."

Councillor Ron Shepherd, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities added: “I am immensely proud of those who helped Susan in her time of need, without them the situation could’ve been much worse.

“The quick thinking and actions of this trio must not be undersold, what they did was nothing short of heroic and this commendation is the least they deserve.”
